"Air Leakage in Homes",

Approved for 3 mandatory IL CEs.

Presented by: Joe Konopacki of Insight Property Services.

Course Description:

Keeping homes dry and warm is essential for an effective controlled environment.  Controlling air flow has been overlooked as a key aspect of achieving these goals.  Air flow affects indoor air quality, comfort, building durability, condensation, combustion safety, recurring mold, icicles, sound , odors, and more.  We will explore these and other issues and show how uncontrolled air flow can be the common link among many problems in homes.  Air sealing solutions and mechanical ventilation strategies will also be presented.  While "homes have to breathe", we will discuss what that means in a practical sense, rather than it being a justification for sloppy installations and poor assemblies.

Objectives:

1.      Understand the dynamics of air flow

2.      Understand how airflow causes interactions between the home’s systems

3.      Identify common air flow problems and their solutions

4.      Increase the student’s knowledge pursuant to Section 1410.520  7) Structural: G) “Identification and inspection of insulation and vapor protection systems.”

Also available, BPI credits.
